Summer travel season is here! Whether you're heading to the Oregon Coast, camping in McCall, or jetting somewhere tropical, don't forget to prep your home before you go. A few smart moves can save you from stress, mess—or worse—while you're gone. Here are some tips we recommend before hitting the road.
Prep Like It's a "You'll-Thank-Yourself-Later" Gift
Empty the trash. Run the dishwasher. Make sure the washing machine and coffee maker is empty. Clear the fridge of anything that might turn into a science experiment. Coming home to a clean space is a small luxury you'll really appreciate.
Keep It Cool Without Wasting Energy
Adjust your thermostat (78° is a good safe bet), close blinds to keep heat out, and unplug small appliances to avoid phantom power drain—and possible hazards.
Make Your Home Look Lived-In
Set a couple lights on timers, pause your mail, and ask a neighbor to grab any packages. Bonus points if they occasionally park in your driveway—it's a great way to make things look active.
Let Someone You Trust Know You're Gone
Share your travel dates and emergency contacts with a friend, family member or neighbor. If something unexpected pops up (like a delivery, leak, or storm), you'll be glad someone local can step in. Make sure they have a way to get into your house (key, garage door code, etc.)
Double-Check Security the Night Before
Lock all doors and windows (yes, even the ones in the back or upstairs), check cameras, and arm your alarm. Do one final walkthrough before bed—you'll sleep better knowing it's all buttoned up.
Triple Check Passports, Travel Reservations
Make sure all IDs are current (especially passports!) and confirm that your hotel, car rental, and other reservations are booked with the right dates. Better to catch it now than at the airport!
